Breast augmentation, with 286,000 procedures in 2012, continues to be the top cosmetic surgical procedure and has been since 2006. Silicone implants were used in 62%, and saline implants in 38%, of all breast augmentations in 2012..


Cosmetic surgical procedures, not among the Top 5, with notable gains in 2012 include:

  • Male breast Reduction (gynomastia) - 5%
  • Upper Arm Lifts - Up 3% (and up a staggering 4473% since 2000)
  • Females accounted for 91% of all cosmetic procedures
  • Caucasians: 10.2 million cosmetic procedures - up 7%
  • Hispanics: 1.6 million procedures - down 1%
  • African Americans: 1.2 million procedures - up 6%
  • Asian Americans: 890,000 procedures - up 21%
  • 13-19 year olds make up the least number of cosmetic procedures - Only 2%
  • 40-54 years make up the majority of cosmetic procedures - 48% of the total; up 6% from 2011
  • Mountain/Pacific region had the most cosmetic procedures in the U.S. - 4.2 million in 2012
  • Business from repeat patients increased 7% from 2011
  • $11 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures in the USA - up 5% from 2011
